This explains how a cold spring is formed. When you walk into the cold spring you might feel a chill, but your body will get hotter later on. And, it’s fun to see gassy bubbles covering your entire body. Reputedly, by bathing in it, cold springs cure skin diseases while drinking spring water cures gastrointestinal problems. .
Doufu Cape
Doufu Cape is a cape located along the coast east of Nanfang-ao. It is composed of a land-tied island connected to a sandbank, otherwise known as a tom bolo. It is named Doufu Cape, because the cape’s rocks resemble Doufu (soy bean curd).
Originally, plans for the cape involved turning it into a port for fishing boats. When the jetty at the east side of Nanfang-ao was completed however, the remaining terrain—a semi-enclosed curved area—became popular as a beach resort for nearby residents. Instead of a fishing port, the plans for Doufu Cape changed. Now, plans include expanding the natural paradise into a recreational beach where visitors can swim, have barbecues, picnics, and fish. Nearby Caidao Hill is a place of unique beauty in which fishermen may wander about and overlook the marine view.
Doufu Cape connects terraced fields, the Chang-ting tourist site, the entrance square, the beach area, and the embankment along the coast from the northwest to the southeast. Due to a filtering net fitted at the mouth of the bay, the water is relatively clean and pure. The sea’s minor waves make it very suitable for swimming, snorkeling, and picnicking.
The sunrise at Doufu Cape is extremely enchanting. Facing the east at dawn, visitors can see a bright sun rising among billowy clouds breaking the dark sky. At nightfall, the scene of lights from the returning fishing boats is another brilliant view. For tourists who would like an unforgettable sight, this spot should not be missed.
Cabo To Fu (queso de soja)
Nanfangao was originally a fishing village occupied by the Ping-Pu Tribe after being subject to suppression by the Han Chinese. During the Japanese colonial period, Nanfangao Fishing Port opened and attracted fishermen from elsewhere to engage in fishing and settle there. A fishing village for immigrants was formed as a result. Residents of Nanfangao came from all over. Customs and cultures were also brought in by different ethnic groups. Special customary practices and cultures were subsequently developed.
To alleviate the problem of inadequate spaces and overcrowding at First Fishing Port, the Second Fishing Port known as NeiPi Fishing Port was constructed in 1955. On NeiPi Road, the Fish Market is the most bustling place, where vendors and tourists are looking for fresh seafood. The Third Fishing Port was constructed in 1965, functioning as a port for large-size encircling net (purse seine) fishing vessel anchorage and deep sea voyages, with large frozen foods processing companies as its regular clients.
Nan Fan Ao

The Park was formerly the Luodong Branch office of the Forestry Administration and the old log pond during the Japanese occupation period. In 1982, the lumber business came to an end. This park has more or less maintained its original look since then. In 2004, the Forestry Administration Office created plans to turn this site into a Lumber Industry Memorial Park as a reminder of Taiping Mountain's golden era of logging and the historical development of Luodong. The Taiwan Lumber Industry Memorial Park occupies a ground area of approximately 20 hectares. It features an ecological pond (the log pond), aquatic plants pond, aquatic plants display area, a steam train engine display area, a railway area, and a wooden path by the water. It serves tourism, educational, cultural, and conservational purposes. It is especially quiet and beautiful in the late afternoon.
The little island in the middle of the log pond is a natural ecological showroom. More than 20 different bird species can be seen here. On the south of Songluo Hall are six well-maintained old steam engines on display. While visiting here, visitors will certainly recall memories of the glorious history of the lumber industry.
Kavalan Whisky
Kavalan Whisky by Jinche Distillery was officially introduced in December, 2008. Water is a key to whisky quality. Situated close to the mountains and the sea, 75% of Yilan is hilly. Yilan, seen as a big natural reservoir, provides ample clean water and becomes a perfect place for distilling quality whisky. With such purity of water from the high mountains, it is inevitable that the Jinche Distillery is able to create very fine Kavalan Whisky, which is smooth to the palate and is clean tasting with a lingering finish.
Research teams from Jinche went to Scotland and Japan to learn about the manufacturing processes. They have also toured around the world to look for the stills used by the famous distilleries in an effort to make the first authentic whisky in Taiwan.

The County Government Center Urban Area was designed to complement the relocation of the administration building. Located in the heart of the planned area, Yilan County Hall is joined by the relocated County Council Building, the Local Court, and the District Attorney's Office. Together these buildings comprise the main administration center of the County Government Center Urban Area and establish the area within the structures of modern democratic political models of urban planning.
1. A Green Experience: Yilan County Hall blends in with its natural surroundings. Visitors can relax in the rooftop garden or in the partially outdoor basement terrace and enjoy the greenery of the adjacent hills or the sunset in the surrounding pond. Whether one comes to the building for business or pleasure, a natural experience is guaranteed.
2. People First: The County Hall not only provides visitors with easy access to the building, but also breaks its past image of a heavily guarded public administrative building. The atmosphere inside is comfortable and amiable, with plenty of sunshine, fresh air, and water. The interior was designed with a "people first" mentality. This can be seen by the people-friendly facilities, such as the main lobby, the center yard, and the rooftop garden, which are all open to the public for leisure, waiting, and relaxation
An Icon: The County Government plays a key role in local residents’ life and serves as an icon which local residents can identify with.
Plum Blossom Lake
The original name of this scenic spot was Ta-Pi, meaning “big pond”. In the 1970’s, its name was changed to Plum Blossom Lake due to its shape. If you row a boat on the lake, you will surely feel very delighted. In spring when the flowers bloom, many butterflies and bees can be seen flying around the lake. The view in spring is beautiful beyond description.
Everyone’s dream of cruising the Dongshan River has now finally come true. In June , 2004, the waterway from Dongshan River Water Park to the Taiwan Theater Museum was officially opened. Here, visitors can feel the gentle breeze brushing against their cheeks. Leisure like this can be found nowhere else but Dongshan River.
Smaller boats which can accommodate eight passengers are powered by electricity, while bigger solar-powered boats can take as many as 40 passengers. Both boats are less noisy and pollution-free. Boating on the Dongshan River is especially attractive to those who want to get close to water. It has been popular among visitors since its introduction, successfully giving a boost to local tourism.

Sinliao Waterfalls:
In the past, there were two waterfalls in Chung-Shan Village of Tung-Shan Hsiang. One was called the Chiuliao Waterfall, and the other, which appeared later with swifter, stronger currents, was called the Sinliao Waterfall. The word “liao” in Taiwanese language denotes a shed or a cottage that aborigines build for shelter when gathering herbs in the mountains.
Dongshan River is also called the “River of Hope”; the Sinliao Waterfalls is her source. Standing under the waterfall, visitors can experience the waterfall’s spray and the mountain’s cool breeze—a pleasant sensation on a hot summer day.
The cold water is refreshing for body and soul. Walk near the falls and listen to the roaring water to put worries aside. Tadpoles, frogs, dragonflies, and butterflies add to the tranquility of the wilderness. Come and experience the pure joy of the wilderness.
Wuweigang Bird Sanctuary
Wuweigang is a natural habitat for wild ducks. It was once a river situated at the southeast of the Lanyang Plain, facing the Pacific Ocean and connected with Pei-fan-ao at its south. The river was named Wuweigang (“a port without a tail” in Chinese), because the river was blocked, preventing the water from draining out to sea. Surrounding the river are Ta-keng, Kangkou, Kangpien, Lingchiao, Yueiming villages.
Over time, a reed-filled marsh formed in Wuweigang. It became hidden and quiet as windbreak trees, like tall beefwoods, Hibiscus tiliaceus, and screw pines, encircled the marsh. The pathless environment reminds one of the scene Henry Thoreau depicts in his classic work, “A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers”. The site is spectacular and rare along Taiwan’s coast. The area is a popular spot for wild ducks to spend the winter months.
Starting in November every year, at least 3,000 wild ducks gather in Wuweigang. The species are numerous, including migrants such as the Green-Winged Teal, the Spot-Billed Duck, the Northern Pintail, and the scene is spectacular as the ducks fly back and forth between the lake and the sea and up and down with the rippling waves. There are approximately 140 species of birds found at Wuweigang every year. Winter (November to February) is the best season for bird watching activities.

Wujie “Zao-ang” – Walking Gods – God’s Sedan Chair Race

Each group carries a god’s statue in a 100m race. The group that finishes the race in the shortest time is the winner. Zao-ang has about 100 years of history. In the past, the villagers prayed for good fortune and expelled the bad omens. To do so, they carried the god on a sedan chair to patrol around the village. Later, it became the race we have now. In the past, the activity was highly competitive, and people got involved in physical conflicts. It was banned for about half a century and only recently has the ritual resumed.

Century Egg (also known as preserved egg)
In the 1970’s, Century Egg had been found residue of lead, causing a panic among customers. As a result, its sale plummeted, wreaking havoc on duck breeding households. Luodong authorities took a number of measures to maintain farmers’ livelihood and save the eggs as a traditional Chinese cuisine. With the help of National Taiwan University, the first lead-free Century Egg was introduced in 1979. The eggs are now not only popular across the island but also exported to the U.S., Japan, Canada, and South Africa.

This record-holding carnival for children is the fourth in Asia, and the one-and-only event in Taiwan certified by the CIOFF (International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts) under the UNSECO. The YICFFF presents folklores and folk games in a composite festival with four themes – performance, exhibition, games and exchange. Although organized by the local government, the event was once cancelled and only brought back in 2010; it immediately received CIOFF certification again in same year nonetheless.
